【Learn Chinese】Basic Mandarin: Misunderstandings in Chine

Learn all the basic mandarin you’ll ever need right here with Mandarin Morning.
Does the following scenario sound familiar to you? You just started to learn Chinese and you are confident of your new vocabulary and want to use it in real life. You carefully think about how to ask and pronounce the question and are really proud of yourself after successfully asking. But then, your opposite answers and you didn’t understand a thing. What to do?

The first thing you can do is to ask your opposite to repeat himself. In Chinese you can ask: 请再说一遍 (qǐng zài shuō yībiàn). Now you will have a second try to understand the answer.
Is your opposite talking to fast? Ask him or her to speak more slowly: 请说慢一点 (qǐng shuō màn yīdiǎn).
Maybe there is one word in the answer you don’t understand. You can ask for the meaning:  X 是什么意思? (X shì shén me yì si)
If that’s also not helping and you just don’t understand, you can say: 我不明白 (wǒ bù míng bái).
You can explain that you just started to learn Chinese and that your Chinese is not very good: 我刚开始学习中文,我中文说得不太好 (wǒ gāng kāi shǐ xué xí zhōng wén, wǒ zhōng wén shuō de bù tài hǎo).
Or you can apologize and say, that you can’t speak Chinese: 对不起, 我不会说汉语 (duìbùqǐ, wǒ bù huì shuō hànyǔ).
