Chengyu Story: Bo Le judging horses

The Chengyu 伯乐识马(bó lè shí mǎ) literally means “Bo Le judging horses.” It is used to praise those who are good at discovering talents.

In the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a man named Sun Yang, who had special skills to identify horses. Sun Yang is good at identifying the quality of the horse according to the characteristics of the horse's appearance. Any horse that he liked must be really good. There was a time when someone sold horses on the street. After three days, still no one asked about his horse. Later, Sun Yang walked by and he favored one of his horses. The price of the horse immediately increased ten times, which shows the quality and talent of the horse. After that, people started to call Sun Yang by the name of Bo Le. In the Tang Dynasty, Han Yu once wrote in a book: 世有伯乐,然后有千里马,千里马常有,而伯乐不常有。 (shì yǒu bó lè, rán hòu yǒu qiān lǐ mǎ, qiān lǐ mǎ cháng yǒu ér bó lè bù cháng yǒu). The meaning is that in the world there are Bo Le (talent scout) and good horses, there are many good horses, but only a few who can spot them. It is of great significance to discover and select talents. According to this story, people use 伯乐识马(bó lè shí mǎ) to describe people who have deep insight and are good at discovering and selecting talents.
