| For anyone living in China long-term, a trip to the bank is one of those unavoidable errands that feels intimidating at first. Chinese banks have their own queue systems, form-filling rules and specific vocabulary you won’t find in most beginner textbooks. But most daily transactions follow a predictable pattern, and with a handful of key phrases, you can handle everything from opening an account to exchanging currency confidently. When you first walk in, you won’t stand in a physical line. You go straight to the 取号机 (qǔhào jī) — ticket machine — select the type of service you need, and print a numbered ticket. Then you sit in the waiting area and watch the screen above the counters for your number to be called. Most large banks have a 大堂经理 (dàtáng jīnglǐ) — lobby manager — near the entrance who can help you pick the right ticket, fill out forms and answer basic questions. Don’t hesitate to ask them for help. Here are the four most common transactions and the phrases you need for each: 1. Opening a bank account To open a 储蓄卡 (chǔxùkǎ) — debit card — you will need your passport and a valid residence permit. (Wǒ xiǎng kāi yī gè yínháng zhànghù.) “I’d like to open a bank account.” (Wǒ xiǎng kāitōng shǒujī yínháng.) “I want to activate mobile banking.” “Is there an annual fee?” 2. (Wǒ xiǎng zhuǎn wǔqiān kuài dào lìng yī gè zhànghù.) “I want to transfer 5000 yuan to another account.” “How long will it take to arrive?” 3. (Wǒ xiǎng bǎ Měiyuán huànchéng Rénmínbì.) “I’d like to exchange US dollars for Chinese yuan.” “What’s today’s exchange rate?” 4. (Bāng wǒ chá yīxià kǎ lǐ de yú’é.) “Please help me check the balance on my card.” Sample Dialogue at the Counter Teller: 您好,请问办理什么业务?(Nín hǎo, qǐngwèn bànlǐ shénme yèwù?) “Hello, what service would you like to use today?” (Wǒ xiǎng kāi yī zhāng chǔxùkǎ, shùnbiàn kāitōng shǒujī yínháng.) “I’d like to open a debit card, and set up mobile banking too.” (Hǎo de, qǐng chūshì yīxià nín de hùzhào, tián yīxià zhè zhāng shēnqǐng biǎo.) “Okay, please show me your passport and fill out this application form.” |
