【Learn Chinese】How to Make Plans with Friends in Chinese

Spring is here, and it's the perfect time to get outside, meet up with friends, and enjoy the beautiful weather! But how do you invite someone to hang out in Chinese? And what do you say when a friend invites you?
Making plans—or 约会 (yuēhuì)—is an essential social skill. (Don't worry, yuēhuì can mean a romantic date, but it's also used for casual hangouts with friends!) Let's learn how to propose, confirm, or politely decline plans like a native speaker.

1. Starting the Conversation: "Are You Free?"
Before you suggest an activity, you need to know if your friend is available.
Are you free this weekend? 这个周末你有空吗?(Zhè ge zhōumò nǐ yǒu kòng ma?)
What are you doing tomorrow? 明天你干什么?(Míngtiān nǐ gàn shénme?)
Do you have time on Friday night? 星期五晚上你有时间吗?(Xīngqī wǔ wǎnshang nǐ yǒu shíjiān ma?)

Key Word: 有空 (yǒu kòng) = to have free time

2. Making Suggestions: "Let's..."
Once you know they're free, it's time to suggest an activity!
Let's go see a movie! 我们去看电影吧!(Wǒmen qù kàn diànyǐng ba!)
Do you want to grab coffee together? 你想一起去喝咖啡吗?(Nǐ xiǎng yīqǐ qù hē kāfēi ma?)
How about eating hotpot? 去吃火锅怎么样?(Qù chī huǒguō zěnmeyàng?)
Let's go for a walk in the park. 我们去公园散步吧。(Wǒmen qù gōngyuán sànbù ba.)

Grammar Tip: Adding 吧 (ba) at the end of a sentence makes it a suggestion, like "Let's..." in English.

3. Setting the Time and Place
After agreeing to meet, you need to decide the details!
What time shall we meet? 我们几点见面?(Wǒmen jǐ diǎn jiànmiàn?)
Where shall we meet? 我们在哪里见面?(Wǒmen zài nǎlǐ jiànmiàn?)

5. The Perfect Phrase: 不见不散 (Bù jiàn bù sàn)
This is a lovely phrase to end your plans with. It literally means "not see, not disperse," but it's the Chinese equivalent of "I'll be there no matter what" or "Be there or be square!" It shows you're excited and committed to the meeting.
