【Learn Chinese】Navigating the Dentist in China

For many, visiting the dentist can feel daunting, especially in a new country. But in China, modern dental care is highly advanced and accessible. Knowing a few key phrases can turn a source of anxiety into a smooth, positive experience.
Let’s walk through a typical visit!

Your journey begins by making an appointment (预约, yùyuē). You can call the dental clinic (牙科诊所, yákě zhěnsuǒ) directly or book through a popular app. It's helpful to say: "我想预约洗牙。" (Wǒ xiǎng yùyuē xǐ yá.) – "I would like to make an appointment for a teeth cleaning."
Upon arrival, you’ll check in at the reception (前台, qiántái). The dental assistant (牙医助理, yáyī zhùlǐ) will escort you to the treatment room (诊疗室, zhěnliáo shì). Here, you meet the dentist (牙医, yáyī). A common and polite greeting is: "医生您好。" (Yīshēng nín hǎo.) – "Hello, doctor."

Clear communication about any problem is key. Here are essential terms:
I have a toothache. - 我牙疼。 (Wǒ yá téng.)
My gums are bleeding. - 我的牙龈出血。 (Wǒ de yáyín chūxiě.)
I have a sensitive tooth. - 我牙齿敏感。 (Wǒ yáchǐ mǐngǎn.)
I have a cavity. - 我有蛀牙。 (Wǒ yǒu zhùyá.)
The dentist will likely want to take an X-ray (拍X光片, pāi X guāng piàn). Common treatments include:
Cleaning (洗牙, xǐyá)
Filling (补牙, bǔyá)
Root canal (根管治疗, gēnguǎn zhìliáo)
Tooth extraction (拔牙, bá yá)

Don’t hesitate to ask about pain (疼痛, téngtòng) management. You can say: "会打麻药吗?" (Huì dǎ máyào ma?) – "Will you use anesthesia?" or "这个治疗会疼吗?" (Zhège zhìliáo huì téng ma?) – "Will this treatment hurt?"

After your treatment, the dentist will give you post-care instructions (注意事项, zhùyì shìxiàng), often including using antibiotics (抗生素, kàngshēngsù) or painkillers (止痛药, zhǐtòng yào). You’ll proceed to the front desk for payment (付款, fùkuǎn). Most clinics accept Alipay (支付宝, Zhīfùbǎo) and WeChat Pay (微信支付, Wēixìn Zhīfù).

Remember, regular dental check-ups are part of a healthy lifestyle in China, encapsulated in the saying: "牙好,胃口就好。" (Yá hǎo, wèikǒu jiù hǎo.) – "Good teeth lead to a good appetite."
