【Learn Chinese】A Guide to Similar Chinese Characters (Par

Welcome back to Part 2 of our exploration of similar Chinese characters! Moving beyond the most common pairs, we now look at characters where the differences are more subtle, often lying in their radicals. Mastering these will significantly boost your reading comprehension and writing accuracy.

Consider the characters 买 (mǎi) and 卖 (mài). Both are related to commerce. 买 (mǎi) means "to buy." It looks like a simplified net, representing the idea of "acquiring" something. 卖 (mài) means "to sell." You'll notice it is simply 买 (mǎi) with a radical on top: 十 (shí - ten). A fun way to remember is: "You need to have 'ten' 十 things to 卖 (sell), but you start with zero to 买 (buy)."

Another pair that trips up learners is 休 (xiū) and 体 (tǐ). 休 (xiū) means "to rest." It is composed of the radical 亻(人 rén - person) next to 木 (mù - wood/tree). The image is of a person leaning against a tree, taking a rest. 体 (tǐ) means "body" or "health" (身体 shēntǐ). Its radical is also 亻(person), but the other component is 本 (běn - origin). You can think: "Your 体 (body) is your 本 (origin)."

Precision is also key with characters like 鸟 (niǎo - bird) and 乌 (wū - crow). 鸟 (niǎo) has a clear dot for the eye of the bird. 乌 (wū), which refers to a crow or blackness (乌黑 wūhēi), is missing that dot. The cultural explanation is that a crow is so black that you can't see its eye!

Finally, let's look at 历 (lì) and 厉 (lì), which are both pronounced "lì." 历 is used in words like 日历 (rìlì - calendar) and 历史 (lìshǐ - history). Its component is 厂 (factory). 厉, meaning "strict" or "severe" as in 厉害 (lìhai - awesome/tough), contains the 万 (wàn - ten thousand) component. Remember: "The 厂 (factory) has a long 历 (history)," and "It's 厉 (strict) to ask for 万 (ten thousand) things."

Confusing these characters is a sign that you're paying close attention to detail! At our school, we turn these challenges into engaging puzzles, helping students build confidence one character at a time.
