【Learn Chinese】How to Call an Ambulance in China

In China, the emergency medical service (EMS) can be reached by dialing 120. This number is available 24/7 and is free to call from any phone, including locked or SIM-less mobile phones.
救护车 (jiùhùchē) - Ambulance
急救 (jiùjí) - Emergency medical services
医院 (yīyuàn) - Hospital
Here are some important steps and tips to ensure you can get help quickly and efficiently:

1. Stay Calm
When you call 120, it’s crucial to remain calm. Speak clearly and concisely to provide accurate information. Panic can lead to misunderstandings, which may delay the arrival of the ambulance.

2. Provide Clear Information
Address 地址 (dìzhǐ): Clearly state the exact location of the patient. Include the district, street, building number, and apartment number. If you’re in a remote area or unsure of the address, describe nearby landmarks or intersections.
Medical Condition 病情 (bìngqíng): Provide the patient’s age, gender, and any known medical conditions. Describe the symptoms or injuries, such as chest pain, unconsciousness, or severe bleeding.
Contact Information: Give your phone number 电话 (diànhuà) so the dispatcher can call back if necessary.

3. Describe the Situation
Explain the nature of the emergency. If there are multiple casualties, mention the number of people affected and the cause, such as a car accident or poisoning.

4. Wait for Instructions
The dispatcher may provide first aid instructions over the phone. Follow these instructions carefully while waiting for the ambulance.

5. Send Someone to Wait for the Ambulance
If possible, have someone go to a visible location, such as the entrance of a building or a street corner, to guide the ambulance to the patient.

6. Prepare for the Ambulance
Ensure the path to the patient is clear of obstacles. Have any relevant medical documents, medications, and personal items ready to go with the patient.

7. Do Not Hang Up
Wait for the dispatcher to end the call. They may need additional information or want to confirm details.
