The god of wealth is affectionately known as 财神爷 (cái shén yé) in Mandarin. 财神 (cái shén) literally translates to wealth god. Even though there are several gods of wealth in Chinese culture, Cai Shen Ye, or Cai Shen in short, is generally recognized as the main wealth god. Every year on the 5th day of the Lunar New Year, people welcoming the God of Fortune (迎财神 – yíng cái shén). This year the day is the 16th of February 2021. He is often depicted riding a black tiger and holding a golden rod. He may also be depicted with an iron tool capable of turning stone and iron into gold. Who is the God of Fortune? Actually, the God of Fortune is not a he— the God of fortune should be a “they”! The God of Fortune has been identified with many historical figures, like Zhao Gong Ming and Bi gan! The most commonly accepted one would be that of Zhao Gong Ming. Different God of Fortune for different age group The God of Fortune has been identified with many historical figures. Some people even stared worshipping every single one of these figures! As such, it’s believed that people of different age group should worship different God of Fortunes! For those below the age of 30, you can consider praying to Gods of Fortune like Bai Gui and Guan Zhong.
