Chengyu Story: Pull Plants to Help them Grow

The Chengyu 揠苗助长 (yà miáo zhù zhǎnɡ) means "to help the seedlings of the crops to grow by pulling them upward". It means to spoil things by excessive enthusiasm. The idiom tells us that we should obey the development rules of things. More haste, less speed.

In the spring and Autumn period, there was a farmer in the state of song who cultivated in the field all the year round. Although the harvest is not very good, but it can barely support the family. In the spring of this year, he planted the seeds diligently as usual, waiting for the seeds to germinate anxiously. He knew that the spring cold will make the seed germination delayed, but looking at the seed does not sprout, he got very anxious. Finally, the weather turned warm, the seedlings drilled out of the soil one by one, and the farmer's face showed a smile. He was looking forward to the growth of the seedlings in his field, so he went to the field every day to see how high the seedlings were. This day, he came to the field to watch carefully, and compared his own seedlings with those of others. How did he feel that his seedlings were growing too slowly? He stood on the edge of the ground, sighing and groaning, while his neighbor was busy watering the seedlings.
The next day, he came to the field again. Walking east and looking west, he said to himself, "how can we not see the height of the seedlings?" At this time, the neighbors were weeding the grass seedlings. On the third day, he came to the field again, looking left and right, the seedlings still did not grow high. At this time, the neighbors are fertilizing the seedlings. On the fourth day and the fifth day, he could not see the height of the seedlings for several days. He walked around in the field and thought to himself: why can't we find a way to help the seedlings grow faster? After a few days, he finally came up with a way, so he rushed to the ground, bent down and pulled up the seedlings one by one. Straight pull his back ache, panting, but looking at the tall seedlings, he was happy. From noon he has been busy until the sun set, very exhausted he went back home. As soon as he entered the house, he excitedly said to his family, "I'm really exhausted today, but it's worth it. I've helped the seedlings grow tall at last." The family even asked, "what method do you use?" "I pull them out.” When the family heard this, they were shocked. His daughter ran to the field in a hurry and was surprised. In the morning, it was all withered.
